Aleksandrov Rally: the test had been passed!

Aleksandrov Rally: the test had been passed!

The final day of Aleksandrov Rally, the IV stage of the Championship of Ukraine, the XII stage of European Cup and the VI stage of Russian Rally Championship, has been a real present for all the fans and spectators of the race. On Sunday, tied in Saturday intrigue, the struggle for primacy in the overall standings came to a new level. The question of who, this year will get the title of the fastest riders of difficult Carpathian roads remained open until the last kilometer of fighting.

On Saturday, the pair of leaders predictably formed from Aleksander Saliuk repeatedly proven his high speed on local roads in the past years, and Valeriy Gorban, participant and the winners of the World Rally Championship. On Sunday, each of them had to face a serious challenge: one from the side of rivals, and another with unexpected troubles on the track.

In the first section of Sunday Aleksander Saliuk, who on Saturday led the nearest rivals with more than half a minute, lost almost all his advantage – the wheel puncture and the mistake led to the fact that upon the midday service his advantage shortened till just 10 seconds from the second time owner Valeriy Gorban! And such a time difference with the strongest competitor already looked shaky... However, the second section further inflame the atmosphere even harder: Gorban wins a special stage, picking up closer to Saliuk, the second special stage... But this attack was not a success: the time reserved earlier by Aleksander Saliuk on the first day, has provided him the victory in Aleksandrov Rally with the advantage of 5.1 seconds! Note that this is the first win of the season by Saliuk on a new car Ford Fiesta R5. Valeriy Gorban driving MINI JCW RRC came second, and the bronze in class 2 had been taken by Nikita Filippov (Skoda Fabia S2000).

In class 3, tension prevailed all Sunday. After the first section the contender for the title of the Russian championship, Gennadiy Broslavskiy continued to hold the leadership. Despite the newly discovered track and pressure from competitors, Broslavskiy continued to lead the class 3 in the first part of Sunday. But almost immediately after him in the back with 16.8 seconds gap, Andrey Zhigunov has completed his first section. The legendary Russian pilot was not too successful on Saturday, but on Sunday he managed to find a way to Aleksandrov Rally. As a result, Zhigunov ousted competitors and broke through to the second position. The third on the section was Yuriy Kochmar.

However, after a midday of service a bold attack on the top three of the class 3 had been taken by another Russian driver Dmitriy Tagirov. He managed to gain two positions and take the second row of class 3 within just two special stages of the second section! Thus, Gennadiy Broslavskiy kept the leading place, the second scored by Tagirov with Andrey Zhigunov closing the top three. So, the Russian pilots took all three podium places in this class!

Evgeniy Sukhovenko continued to impose pace to the competitors on 2WD cars. Ukrainian-Russian confrontation with another driver in the same class, Volodymyr Kondratenko, completed, after all, by the victory of the guest – Sukhovenko took first place in class 5 and confidently entrenched in the top twenty of overall classification. Volodymyr Kondratenko came second, and Yuriy Kasim granted his third podium step of class 5.
